From the Commodore

“There is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats” – unless its messing around at the SRYC, in boats, out on the dock or just on the upper deck watching another gorgeous sunset.

On behalf of the Bridge and Board, “Welcome Aboard” for the Club’s 99th season!

We are gifted with a wonderful clubhouse set on beautiful patch of water, but most of all, we are gifted with the companionship of friends, old and new, with whom to share this bounty. I urge you this year to nurture those old friendships and to make new ones at the Club.

Making all this possible, of course, is an outstanding team of volunteers whose efforts and talents are offered generously on behalf of us all. To start, we have a great social calendar planned by Chuck and Eileen Stern and their entertainment committee. The activities range from pizza nights to black-tie dinners and from a boat hopping to picnics and wine tasting. There is something in this agenda for everyone.

Joe Peck (House Chair), along with our caterer, has planned another series of evenings dining at the club, and keeping the clubhouse and docks in Bristol fashion are Gary Casazza (House Maintenance) and Ken Debrowski (Fleet Captain).

For the boating crews, there are sail racing events in the river and on the bay as well as our 32nd annual summer cruise for both sail and power vessels. The cruise committee is being led by veteran skippers Norm Jacobs and John Dunnell with a planned stop for a Commodore’s Cocktail Party and Cruise Dinner at Mystic Seaport – one of the finest nautical museums in the world.

This year we have an expansion of the very successful “Ladies Night” held last year to three events this year. Diana Caliendo and her committee of Annemarie McGlone and June Zimmerman are leading this emerging effort.

And, brand new this year is a series of Seamanship / Marine Education programs being led by Carl Bergeron with events planned for one evening in each of the months of May, June, August and September.

Meanwhile behind the scenes there has been an outstanding effort to close the club for winter, meet with prospective members, prepare the operating budget, manage the slips and moorings, organize committees, plan and carry out winter projects, schedule all of the summer events and just work hard on behalf of the club to do whatever needs to be done. To all of you who make this happen – I offer my, and the membership’s sincere thanks!

Madeline and I wish you all a wonderful season at the Club and look forward to seeing you there.
